Di Pacci — Limited Edition Heat-Exchanger E61 Espresso Machine
ECM Big Coffee Boxer — BMW R 18 Limited Edition
The ECM Big Coffee Boxer is a working espresso machine built from the actual engine of BMW's R 18 cruiser, and only 80 will ever be made.
The ECM Big Coffee Boxer was developed by ECM and BMW Motorrad around original components of the R 18's 1802cc two-cylinder Big Boxer engine, the largest boxer twin BMW has put into production. What faces your guests is the engine itself: polished cylinder heads, finned casing and two analogue gauges. Behind it sits a proper ECM espresso setup with an E61 brew group, a 1.9 litre stainless steel heat-exchanger boiler and a quiet rotary pump, so it brews and steams at the same time like any serious prosumer machine.
Underneath the engine casing it is ECM engineering you'd recognise from the Elektronika and Mechanika ranges, with the plumbing routed to look like oil lines. Each machine is assembled by hand in a strictly limited run of 80 worldwide, sold only through ECM Exclusive Line dealers. It is also big: 900 mm wide, 600 mm deep and 64 kg, so plan the bench before you plan the coffee.

Key Features of the ECM Big Coffee Boxer
🏍️ Built from the R 18 Big Boxer
The cylinders, heads and casing are original BMW R 18 engine components, not a replica shell.
🔧 ECM E61 group
Thermosyphon circulation keeps the group hot and stable, with the gentle mechanical pre-infusion the E61 is known for.
🔥 Brew and steam together
A 1.9 litre heat-exchanger boiler runs two separate water circuits, so you can steam milk while the shot pulls.
🌡️ Three boiler settings
Choose 120, 124 or 128 °C on the display to set how hot the machine brews and how hard it steams.
⏱️ Shot timer and switches
The discreet display times every extraction, with pre-infusion and ECO mode each switchable on or off.
🔇 Quiet rotary pump
No boxer roar here: the rotary pump is quiet enough to talk over and can run from the tank or mains water.
From Motorcycle Engine to Espresso Machine
ECM didn't wrap a coffee machine in an engine-shaped cover. It took the R 18's boxer components and built the espresso system around and behind them, keeping the engine's silhouette intact from every angle you'd normally see.
- The engine faces forward: cylinder heads out to each side, finned casing in the middle, and the two analogue gauges reading boiler and pump pressure.
- Behind it sits the working machine: the E61 group, the 1.9 litre heat-exchanger boiler and the rotary pump, with water lines styled as oil lines.
- In use it behaves like an ECM heat exchanger: flush the group briefly, pull the shot on the E61 lever, and steam on the second circuit at the same time.
The result is a machine that makes the same calibre of espresso as ECM's prosumer range, in a form that is unmistakably a BMW boxer. You're paying for the object as much as the coffee, and the coffee holds up its end.

Di Pacci recommendation: Buy the Big Coffee Boxer if the R 18 engine on your bench is the point — as a collector's piece, a centrepiece for a showroom or home bar, or a once-only gift for a BMW rider. Don't bother if you're buying for the coffee alone: the ECM Elektronika Profi II brews on the same architecture for a fraction of the price and fits a normal kitchen.

Who This Espresso Machine Is For
✓ Ideal if you:
- Ride or collect BMW motorcycles and want the R 18 engine as a working object
- Want one of only 80 machines ever made
- Are fitting out a home bar, dealership, showroom or office reception
- Make milk drinks and want to brew and steam at the same time
- Like E61 heat-exchanger workflow and ECM build quality
- Have a solid bench at least 900 mm wide and 600 mm deep
✗ Consider alternatives if you:
- Want ECM espresso quality at a normal price; see the ECM Elektronika Profi II
- Have overhead cabinets less than about 650 mm above the bench — at 600 mm tall it won't fit under most
- Want two PID-controlled boilers and flow profiling; see the Lelit Bianca V3
- Need a machine this week — each one is hand-built and there may be a wait
ECM Big Coffee Boxer — Frequently Asked Questions
Is the ECM Big Coffee Boxer made from a real BMW R 18 engine?
Yes. It uses original components of the 1802cc two-cylinder Big Boxer engine from the BMW R 18. ECM built a full espresso system behind and inside those parts, so the engine you see is genuine BMW hardware.
How many ECM Big Coffee Boxer machines are being made?
Only 80 worldwide. Each is hand-assembled by ECM and sold through ECM Exclusive Line dealers, so Australian allocation is very limited.
Can the Big Coffee Boxer brew and steam at the same time?
Yes. It has a 1.9 litre stainless steel heat-exchanger boiler with two separate water circuits, so you can steam milk while a shot extracts.
Does the ECM Big Coffee Boxer need a special power point?
No. It draws 1500 W and runs from a standard 10 amp power point.
How much bench space does the Big Coffee Boxer need?
It measures 900 mm wide, 600 mm deep and 600 mm high without the portafilter, and weighs 64 kg. That fills a standard 600 mm benchtop front to back, so check overhead cabinet clearance and that the bench can take the weight.
Can it be plumbed in?
Yes. It runs from its 2 litre glass reservoir or a direct mains water connection. Di Pacci offers plumbed installation in the Sydney metro area.
How long is the wait for a Big Coffee Boxer?
Each machine is hand-built, and ECM advises there may be a waiting period. Call Di Pacci on (02) 9758 0760 to confirm current allocation and delivery timing before you order.
What grinder should I pair with the ECM Big Coffee Boxer?
A quality espresso grinder with fine, stepless adjustment. The ECM V-Titan 64 suits it best visually, while the ECM S-Automatik 64 or a Mazzer home grinder suit busy milk-drink households.
