The Meraki Gen 2 puts a dual boiler, a rotary pump, a built-in espresso grinder and two scales into one benchtop machine. It is built for people who want to weigh, grind, brew and steam at home without lining up three separate pieces of equipment.

Most home machines with a grinder on board use a single heating system and a vibratory pump. The Meraki takes a different route, borrowing the layout of a small commercial machine: separate brew and steam boilers, a rotary pump holding 9 bar, and a 58mm E61-compatible portafilter. A touchscreen runs the workflow, and the machine is available in White or Black.

Two boilers, two jobs

A 350ml brew boiler and a 550ml steam boiler each hold their own temperature. You can pull a shot and steam milk together, and back-to-back flat whites do not mean waiting for the machine to recover.

Rotary pump at 9 bar

Rotary pumps are the type fitted to café machines. They hold steady pressure through the shot and run more quietly than the vibratory pumps found in most home machines.

Brew by weight, built in

One scale sits under the grinder to weigh your dose, and a second sits under the cup to weigh the shot. You work to a recipe in grams without a separate scale on the drip tray.

Espresso grinder on board

The integrated grinder is tuned for espresso and offers 45 grind steps, so dialling in a new coffee happens on the same machine that brews it.

The touchscreen handles shot settings and steam, and Meraki delivers software changes through over-the-air updates. According to Meraki, the machine also uses PID temperature control with a heated group and offers pre-infusion.

Setup note: the Meraki is tank-fed, so there is no plumbing to arrange. It needs a 220–240V earthed power point, ideally one it is not sharing with a kettle or toaster, and it is not suitable for 110–120V supplies. Allow bench space for a 370 × 370mm footprint and 415mm of height, plus room above to fill the bean hopper and water tank.

Getting the best out of it

Fresh coffee makes the biggest difference. A built-in grinder and scales will show you exactly what your beans are doing, so start with recently roasted coffee beans and adjust the grind a step at a time until the shot weight and time land where you want them.

Water is the other half. Filtered water protects both boilers from scale and keeps flavour clean, and a regular descale and backflush with the included blind basket keeps the group and valves working properly. Frequently asked questions

Does the Meraki Gen 2 have a built-in grinder?

Yes. An espresso-focused grinder with 45 grind steps is built into the machine, so you grind, dose and brew from one unit. A scale under the grinder weighs the dose as it lands in the dosing cup.

Can it brew espresso and steam milk at the same time?

Yes. A 350ml brew boiler and a separate 550ml steam boiler each hold their own temperature, so you can pull a shot and texture milk together rather than waiting for one boiler to switch between jobs.

What portafilter size does the Meraki use?

It uses a 58mm, E61-compatible portafilter, the size found on most commercial machines. That means standard 58mm baskets, tampers and distribution tools will fit. A portafilter, 18g basket, blind basket and double spout are included.

Does it need to be plumbed in?

No. The Meraki runs from a removable 2000ml water tank, so it only needs bench space and a power point. Use filtered water and keep up with descaling to protect the boilers.

What power supply does the Meraki need?

It is a 220–240V appliance, which matches a standard New Zealand power point. Plug it into an earthed outlet on its own rather than a multi-board shared with a kettle or toaster. It is not suitable for 110–120V supplies.
