A hand grinder is not the budget option — it is a different one. There is no motor to heat the beans, no fan noise at six in the morning, and nothing to plug in, so it works as well in a tent as on a bench. What you trade is time: a dose takes a minute or two of cranking, and espresso-fine takes longer than filter.
