Heat Exchanger Home Espresso

Bezzera BZ10 Compact Heat Exchanger with BZ Group

The BZ10 is a compact, Italian-made heat exchanger machine built around Bezzera's own electrically heated group. It brews and steams at the same time, takes a 58mm portafilter, and fits on a bench where a full-size E61 machine would not.

Bezzera has been building espresso machines in Milan since 1901, and it still designs its own groups and boilers. The BZ10 is the result at home scale: a 1.5L heat exchanger boiler, a vibration pump, a 3L tank and a group that heats itself electrically instead of waiting for hot water to circulate from the boiler.

Why the BZ10 has the reputation it does

The BZ10 has stayed in Bezzera's range for years because it solves the two complaints people have about heat exchanger machines: slow warm-up and bench size.

Electrically heated group

Most machines in this class use an E61 group that warms slowly as boiler water circulates through it. The BZ group has its own heating elements, so it comes up to temperature sooner and holds it while the machine is on.

Brew and steam together

A heat exchanger draws fresh brew water through a tube inside the steam boiler. You can pull a shot and texture milk at the same time, which matters if most of your coffees are flat whites.

Clean finish to every shot

A 3-way solenoid valve releases pressure from the group when the shot ends. The puck comes out drier and the portafilter can be removed straight away.

Small footprint

At 250mm wide the BZ10 takes up noticeably less bench than most E61 heat exchangers, and still gives you a cup warmer on top and a dual-needle gauge on the front.

Who it suits

  • Home baristas moving up from a single-boiler or thermoblock machine
  • Households that make mostly milk coffees and want to steam while the shot runs
  • Smaller kitchens where bench width is limited
  • Anyone who wants a traditional Italian machine without E61 warm-up times

Setup note: the BZ10 is tank-fed, so there is no plumbing to arrange. It needs a standard earthed power point and enough clearance above the machine to lift the tank lid and reach the cup warmer. Let the machine come fully up to temperature before your first shot of the day.

Getting the best out of it

A heat exchanger machine rewards a good grinder more than any other upgrade. The BZ10 has no built-in grinder, so pair it with one of our home coffee grinders that can hold a fine espresso setting, and feed it freshly roasted coffee beans.

Use filtered water to limit scale in the boiler and heat exchanger, and backflush regularly with the blind filter to keep the solenoid valve and group clean. If the machine has been sitting idle, run a short flush through the group before brewing to bring the water back to brewing temperature.

Comparing options? The Bezzera Aria is the E61 alternative in the same family, and the rest of the range is in home coffee machines.

Frequently asked questions

How is the BZ group different from an E61?

The BZ group is Bezzera's own design and is heated electrically by elements in the group itself. An E61 group is heated by boiler water circulating through it, which takes longer. The practical difference is a quicker warm-up and a group with fewer mechanical parts to service.

Can I brew espresso and steam milk at the same time?

Yes. The BZ10 is a heat exchanger machine, so brew water and steam are available together. You can pull a shot and texture milk without switching modes or waiting for the boiler to recover.

Does the BZ10 have a PID?

No. Boiler temperature is managed by a pressure switch, and the electrically heated group looks after temperature at the coffee. If you want adjustable digital temperature control, look at a PID-equipped machine in our home coffee machines range.

Does it need to be plumbed in?

No. The BZ10 runs from a 3L internal tank with a low-water cut-out, so it only needs bench space and a power point.

Will it fit in a small kitchen?

The BZ10 measures 250mm wide, 425mm deep and 375mm high, which is narrower than most E61 heat exchanger machines. Allow extra height to lift the tank lid.

Do I need a separate grinder?

Yes. The BZ10 is an espresso machine only, so it needs a burr grinder capable of a fine, consistent espresso grind. Our home coffee grinders collection covers suitable options.
