Get the diameter right and most tamping problems disappear. A tamper a millimetre undersized leaves a rim of loose grounds around the basket, and water takes that path instead of the coffee — which is where most channelling starts, not with how hard you press. Sizing

58mm is the commercial standard, with 58.4mm for slightly wider baskets. Home and prosumer machines vary — 51, 53, 55 and 57mm all appear here, so check your portafilter rather than assume.

Bases and handles

Flat suits most baskets. Convex curves slightly, which some prefer for puck release. Concept Art and Pullman sell bases and handles separately, so you can pair a stainless base with timber or anodised and replace either later. Calibrated tampers like the Pesado give way at a set force — a handle mechanism, not a base profile.
