Di Pacci — Bench-Mounted Automatic Portafilter Cleaner

QuinSpin Portafilter Cleaner

The QuinSpin Portafilter Cleaner empties and polishes a double basket in roughly three seconds, so nobody on your bar ever has to bang a portafilter on a knock tube again.

The QuinSpin Portafilter Cleaner is a counter-mounted device that removes spent grounds and cleans the basket in two stages. Press the portafilter onto the drill head and the spinning bristles lift out around 99% of the puck; move it across to the twin brush heads and the last film of coffee is polished off the walls and screen of the basket. The motor turns at 400 RPM and the whole unit is triggered by the weight of the portafilter itself, so no switch, no lever and no downward force are needed. Grounds drop straight through into a container or bin liner positioned underneath the bench.

The obvious alternative is a knock tube or knock box, and the QuinSpin differs in three ways that matter over a full shift: it is quiet, it takes no wrist effort, and it removes the residue a knock never touches, which is what stops old coffee oils tainting the next shot. It is also considerably smaller than a knock drawer, and because it mounts through the counter it frees the floor or bench space a bin was occupying. This is the current V2.4 generation, with an upgraded black planetary gearbox and the stainless steel under-counter clamp set that secures the unit from below rather than around the cable.

Key Features of the QuinSpin

🔇 The knock tube goes quiet

Banging a portafilter is the loudest repeated noise in most cafés. The QuinSpin turns that into a low whirr, which changes the room for the customers sitting closest to the bar as much as it does for the staff behind it.

⏱️ Around three seconds per portafilter

A second on the drill head and a second on the brushes is the whole cycle. Across a few hundred coffees a day that adds up, and it removes a step baristas usually rush through.

✋ No force, one hand

The mechanism is sensitive enough that the weight of the portafilter starts it. There is no knocking action to repeat a thousand times a week, which is the point for anyone who has had wrist or elbow trouble behind a machine.

🧹 Two heads, two jobs

The drill head clears the puck; the twin double-bristle brush heads take off the film of fines and oils left behind. Knocking only ever does the first of those two jobs.

🔩 Clamped from underneath

The V2.4 stainless steel bottom clamp fixes the unit through the counter from below, so there is no cable running across the bench to be cut and no gap for coffee to work into.

♻️ Brush heads are consumable, not the unit

Bristles wear. The heads unclip and are sold separately, so a worn QuinSpin is a small parts order rather than a replacement device.

Why a Spinning Head Beats a Knock Tube

Knocking removes the puck. It does not remove anything else, which is why a basket that has been knocked all day still leaves a brown ring on a cloth and why most bars end up wiping baskets with a rag that has been sitting damp since opening. The QuinSpin was designed around that gap, and it works by splitting the job into two passes that each take about a second.

  • First pass — drill head. The head is machined to the geometry and depth of your specific basket, so the bristles reach the corner where the wall meets the floor of the basket. This lifts out roughly 99% of the puck in one press.
  • Second pass — brush heads. Two double-bristle brush heads take the remaining fines and the oil film off the basket walls and the underside of the rim. Moving quickly between the two heads works better than pausing, because the residue is still loose.
  • Containment. Everything falls straight down through the unit into whatever you have positioned below the counter, so grounds do not end up on the floor, on the drip tray, or on the barista.

The practical outcome is a basket that goes back into the group clean rather than merely empty, without a cloth touching it. Cafés that make the switch usually reclaim the floor space the knock bin occupied, and the bar gets noticeably quieter — which is the change customers notice first.

QuinSpin vs a Traditional Knock Box

Almost everyone buying a QuinSpin is replacing a knock tube or knock drawer, so this is the comparison that matters. The knock box wins on price and nothing else.

Feature QuinSpin Portafilter Cleaner Knock Tube / Knock Box
Noise Low motor whirr for about three seconds Repeated impact — the loudest sound on most bars
Time per portafilter Around 3 seconds, one hand, two heads 1–2 seconds to knock, plus a wipe if the basket needs it
Wrist and elbow load None — the portafilter's own weight starts it Repetitive impact loading, hundreds of times a shift
Residue removed Puck plus the fines and oil film on the basket walls Puck only
Space used 210 × 126mm cut into the counter, container below Bench-top box or a floor-standing bin

Di Pacci recommendation: If you are pulling steady volume across two or three groups, the QuinSpin pays for itself in noise, wrist health and basket cleanliness well before it does in seconds saved. Don't bother if you run single baskets, if you switch between single and double baskets, or if this is a home setup doing a handful of shots a day — a good knock box from our coffee machine accessories range is the sensible buy at that volume. Also skip it if you can't cut or clamp through your counter, because it has to be fixed to a flat surface to work.

What to Pair With the QuinSpin

The QuinSpin handles the basket between shots. These are the things it does not replace, and the one item you will need to supply yourself.

Pair with What it does Why it pairs well
Grounds container or bin liner Sits below the counter Not supplied with the QuinSpin, and the unit won't work without something to catch what falls through
Backflush detergent — Cafetto, Puly Caff, Urnex Group head and screen cleaning The QuinSpin cleans the basket, not the group. You still backflush daily
Precision tampers and dosing tools Puck prep Fits the same bench run — the QuinSpin sits best in front of the grinder, where prep already happens
Microfibre bar cloths Steam wand and surfaces You will use far fewer of them on baskets, but the wand still needs one

Who This Portafilter Cleaner Is For

✓ Ideal if you:
  • Run a café doing steady volume across two or more groups
  • Use double baskets exclusively, in one consistent brand and dose
  • Want the noise of knocking out of a small or acoustically live room
  • Have staff with wrist, elbow or shoulder complaints from repetitive knocking
  • Need the floor space a knock bin is currently taking up
  • Can cut or clamp the unit through a bench with access underneath
✗ Consider alternatives if you:
  • Use single baskets, or switch between single and double — QuinSpin only supports double-basket geometries and the drill head is cut for one
  • Pull a handful of shots a day at home — a knock box from our accessories range costs a fraction of this
  • Can't modify the counter, or have no access to clamp the unit from underneath
  • Change basket brands or doses regularly — you would need a new drill head each time

QuinSpin Portafilter Cleaner — Frequently Asked Questions

Will the QuinSpin fit my portafilter baskets?

It fits standard 58mm and 58.3mm commercial portafilters, but the drill head itself is cut to the exact geometry and depth of your basket, so we need the brand and dose when you order. Supported ranges include VST, La Marzocco, Pullman, IMS, Pesado, Weber Workshop Unibasket, Big Bang and WMF. If your basket isn't on that list, call us on (02) 9758 0760 before ordering and we'll check it with the manufacturer.

Does the QuinSpin work with single baskets?

No. QuinSpin supports double-basket geometries only, and the manufacturer specifically advises against it for bars that use both single and double baskets. If singles are part of your workflow, this isn't the right product for you.

How is the QuinSpin installed?

It mounts into the counter or another flat surface and is secured from underneath with the supplied stainless steel clamp set, so you need access below the bench. Positioning it in front of the grinder gives the best workflow, with a container or bin liner directly below to catch the grounds. All the fixings are in the box.

How long does it take to clean one portafilter?

About three seconds — roughly a second on the drill head and a second on the brush heads. Moving quickly between the two heads works better than pausing, because the residue is still loose. Because it operates one-handed, two portafilters can be cleaned in one pass.

Is a stainless steel container included?

No, the container is not supplied. Grounds fall straight through the unit, so you need something below the counter to catch them — most cafés use a bin liner or a container they already have. Talk to us on (02) 9758 0760 if you want help choosing one that fits your bench cavity.

Can the brush heads be replaced when they wear out?

Yes. Both the brush heads and the drill head are replaceable consumables, which is the point of the design — the bristles are what wear, not the motor. Di Pacci can supply replacements, so a tired QuinSpin is a parts order rather than a new unit.

How noisy is the QuinSpin compared to knocking?

Much quieter. It replaces a repeated metal-on-metal impact with a short motor whirr at 400 RPM lasting a few seconds. In small cafés and fit-outs with hard surfaces, this is usually the single biggest noise reduction available on the bar.

What power does it need in Australia?

A standard 10 amp power point. The unit runs on 12V 1A through a plug pack that accepts 110–240V input, and it ships with an Australian Type I lead. No plumbing, no dedicated circuit and no electrician are required.
