Description

Precision — Filter Coffee Grinder

Precision GS3 — 80 mm Filter Burrs, Micrometric

The larger of the two Precision filter grinders. Eighty millimetre filter burrs driven by a 300 W motor, with micrometric adjustment and a stainless steel grounds cup — built for people brewing filter coffee in real volume.

Eighty millimetre burrs are unusual at this end of the market. Most home filter grinders sit in the 40 to 64 mm range, and the jump to 80 mm changes two things. Larger burrs cut a given dose in fewer rotations, which means less heat transferred into the coffee and a faster grind. They also tend to produce a narrower spread of particle sizes, and for filter brewing that spread is what separates a clean, sweet cup from one that tastes simultaneously sour and bitter — the signature of grounds extracting at different rates.

The 300 W motor exists to turn burrs that size without struggling. Combined with micrometric adjustment, you get meaningful control across the coarse range where filter methods live: fine enough for an AeroPress, open enough for a cold brew or a plunger, with real resolution in between rather than three usable settings. The grind starts either from the button on the front or the switch on the rear for continuous manual operation, and grounds fall into the stainless steel cup supplied with it.

Where the extra size earns its place

80 mm burrs

Substantially larger than the burr sets usually found in home filter grinders. More cutting surface per rotation means a faster grind and less heat working its way into the coffee.

300 W of motor behind them

Bigger burrs need real torque to turn under load. The 300 W motor keeps the grind speed steady through a full dose rather than bogging down partway.

Micrometric adjustment

Fine, controlled increments across the filter range. You can genuinely separate a pour over setting from a plunger setting instead of compromising between them.

Two operating modes

Push the front button for a quick grind, or use the rear switch for continuous manual running when you are working through a larger batch.

Who it suits

  • Serious filter and pour over drinkers who want burr size rather than just adjustability
  • Households brewing plunger or batch coffee daily in larger quantities
  • Anyone who has outgrown a small filter grinder and wants a faster, cooler grind
  • Offices running batch brew or plunger for several people
  • Buyers who already own an espresso grinder and want a dedicated filter machine alongside it

Availability and finish: this grinder currently shows as unavailable — use the stock notification option on this page, or call 09 9779924, to be told when it returns. Note also that the description on this listing gives the finish as matte black in one place and gloss black in another; we have left the finish out of the table rather than state the wrong one. Getting the best out of it

Grind at brew time. Filter coffee gives up its aromatics quickly once ground, and with burrs this size the grind itself takes seconds, so there is no reason to prepare ahead. Weigh both the coffee in and the water out — filter brewing is a ratio exercise, and a scale will improve your cup more reliably than any further equipment spend.

Dial in from coarse towards fine, adjusting in small steps and tasting as you go. Watch the drawdown time on a pour over or the body on a plunger and let those guide you rather than chasing a number. Pair the GS3 with fresh coffee beans, particularly lighter roasts, which is where a grinder of this size shows what it can do. The Precision range covers scales and brewing tools, while the broader home grinder and home coffee machine collections cover the espresso side.

Frequently asked questions

How does the GS3 compare with the GS1?

Both are compact filter grinders sharing micrometric adjustment, a stainless steel grounds cup and the same front button and rear switch controls. The GS3 is the larger machine, with 80 mm filter burrs, a 300 W motor and a weight of 5 kg. The GS1 runs a 180 W motor and weighs 3.5 kg.

Why do larger burrs matter for filter coffee?

Larger burrs cut a dose in fewer rotations, so the grind is faster and less heat is transferred into the coffee. They also tend to produce a narrower spread of particle sizes, which helps filter methods extract evenly and gives a cleaner cup.

Can I use the GS3 for espresso?

No, it is not intended for espresso. The GS3 is fitted with filter burrs and its adjustment range is set up for coarser brewing. If espresso is your main method, look at the espresso models in the Precision range such as the GSP or GS7 instead.

Which brew methods does it suit?

Plunger, pour over, drip, batch brew, AeroPress and cold brew are all within its range. Micrometric adjustment lets you set each of those distinctly rather than settling on one compromise setting for everything.

How much bench space does it need?

The GS3 measures 120 mm wide, 230 mm deep and 360 mm high, and weighs 5 kg. It stays narrow despite the larger burr set, so allow clearance above the 360 mm height for filling the hopper and it will suit most benches.
