Description

Precision β€” Filter Coffee Grinder

Precision GS1 β€” Compact Filter Grinder, Micrometric

A small, purpose-built filter grinder in gloss black. Micrometric adjustment, a stainless steel grounds cup, and two ways to start the grind β€” the front button or a switch on the rear. At 3.5 kg and 120 mm wide, it takes up very little bench.

Most grinders sold to home users are espresso grinders that can be pushed coarser if you insist. The GS1 is the opposite: it is built for filter from the outset, which matters because the two jobs are genuinely different. Espresso needs a very fine grind with tiny adjustments; filter, plunger, pour over and drip need a coarser, more open grind where consistency across the range matters more than absolute fineness. A grinder set up for the coarse end simply behaves better there.

Operation is deliberately uncomplicated. Push the portafilter or your cup against the front button, or flip the switch on the rear for a continuous manual grind, and coffee falls into the stainless steel grounds cup that comes with it. Micrometric adjustment lets you move the setting in small increments rather than jumping between fixed positions, which is what lets you find the difference between a plunger grind and a V60 grind instead of settling for something in between.

Why a dedicated filter grinder

Built for the coarse end

Filter burrs are shaped to cut cleanly at coarser settings. An espresso grinder run coarse tends to produce an uneven mix of fines and boulders, which muddies a pour over or plunger.

Micrometric adjustment

Small, controlled increments rather than fixed clicks. That is what lets you separate a plunger grind from a drip grind properly instead of approximating both with one setting.

Two ways to start it

A front button for quick grinding straight into a vessel, or the rear switch for continuous manual operation when you want to run a larger batch without holding anything.

Genuinely small

120 mm wide, 220 mm deep, 360 mm high and 3.5 kg. It fits where a full-size espresso grinder will not, which makes it practical as a second grinder alongside one you already own.

Who it suits

  • Plunger, pour over, drip and AeroPress drinkers who want a grinder matched to the method
  • Households already running an espresso grinder who want a dedicated second one for filter
  • Small kitchens where bench space is the binding constraint
  • Anyone moving off pre-ground filter coffee for the first time
  • Offices brewing batch or plunger coffee rather than espresso

Burr diameter: the specification list on this listing gives two different figures for the burr size. We have not carried either forward rather than state one that may be wrong. If burr diameter is a deciding factor for you, call 09 9779924 or use the contact page and we will confirm it against the unit before you order.

Getting the best out of it

Grind immediately before brewing. Filter coffee loses aromatics faster than espresso does once ground, and the gap between grinding at brew time and grinding an hour earlier is easy to taste. A scale helps here too β€” filter recipes are ratio-driven, so weighing beans in and water out will improve your results more than any equipment change.

Work coarse to fine when dialling in. Start well coarse, brew, and tighten gradually until the drawdown time lands where you want it. Pair the GS1 with fresh coffee beans β€” lighter roasts in particular reward a filter grinder β€” and see the rest of the Precision range for scales and brewing tools. If you also pull espresso, the home grinder collection covers the espresso-focused models, and home coffee machines covers the machine side.

Frequently asked questions

Can the GS1 grind fine enough for espresso?

The GS1 is built with filter burrs and is intended for plunger, pour over, drip and similar methods. It is not the right grinder if espresso is your main brew method β€” for that you want one of the espresso models such as the GSP or GS7, which use espresso burrs and a finer adjustment range.

How do the two grinding controls work?

There are two options. You can push against the button on the front of the grinder, which runs it while pressed, or use the switch on the rear for a continuous manual grind that stays on until you switch it off.

What does the grounds cup do?

A stainless steel cup is included to catch the grounds as they leave the chute. It lets you grind a measured amount and then transfer it to your brewer, which is more practical than grinding directly into a plunger or dripper.

How does the GS1 compare with the GS3?

Both are compact filter grinders with micrometric adjustment, a stainless grounds cup and the same two grinding controls. The GS3 is the larger of the two, with 80 mm filter burrs, a 300 W motor and a weight of 5 kg, against the GS1 at 180 W and 3.5 kg.

How much bench space does it need?

It measures 120 mm wide, 220 mm deep and 360 mm high, and weighs 3.5 kg. That is a genuinely small footprint, so allow clearance above the 360 mm height for filling the hopper and it will fit most benches easily.
