ECM Mechanika VI Slim PID — Slim HX, Serious Espresso

A German-built heat-exchanger machine that gives a home barista genuine control — three brew temperatures, switchable pre-infusion and PID accuracy — all in a slim 25cm-wide body that fits a real kitchen.

The Mechanika VI Slim is ECM's answer for the coffee connoisseur who will not compromise on quality to save space. It keeps the large 2.2-litre heat-exchange boiler and 2.8-litre reservoir of a full-size machine, but narrows the footprint to just 250mm wide so it sits comfortably on a domestic bench.

This latest generation is improved over the previous model, with a practical toggle switch that lets you choose your brew temperature, turn pre-infusion on or off, and drop the machine into ECO mode when it is idle — the kind of everyday control that used to mean stepping up to a far larger machine.

Three brew temperatures

The Mechanika VI Slim runs from its onboard 2.8L reservoir on a standard 10-amp power point, so no plumbing or special supply is needed — just give it a stable bench spot with room at the back to lift the cup tray and refill the tank.

Getting the best out of it

A heat-exchanger machine rewards a short flushing routine: run a little water through the group before your first shot of the day to settle the brew temperature, then dial your grind to suit the roast. The adjustable expansion valve lets you fine-tune brew pressure over time as you get to know the machine.

The grinder does as much for the cup as the machine, so pair the Slim with a capable home grinder from our coffee grinders for home range, and keep it fed with fresh coffee beans. Is the Mechanika VI Slim a dual boiler?

No — it is a heat-exchanger (HX) machine with a single 2.2-litre boiler that lets you brew and steam at the same time. It gives much of the workflow of a dual boiler in a slimmer, simpler package.

Can I change the brew temperature?

Yes. A toggle switch selects three PID-controlled brew temperatures — 120°C, 124°C and 128°C — so you can match the setting to a lighter or darker roast.

Does it need to be plumbed in?
