La Marzocco · Commercial Espresso

FB70 — Commercial Espresso

La Marzocco built the FB70 for its own seventieth anniversary: the Linea's engineering wrapped in a body that could be produced in virtually any colour. It is the machine to buy when the bar needs a centrepiece and the espresso still has to be right.

Saturated brewing groups and dual-boiler technology, in stainless steel, handmade in Florence. Thousands were built and sold worldwide, and the FB70 helped launch a great many of the independent bars that went on to define specialty coffee. A refurbished one is a way into that lineage at a fraction of current pricing.

What makes it worth having

An anniversary body built for colour

The FB70's shell was designed to be produced in virtually any finish. That is why colours like this one turn up on an FB70 and almost nowhere else from the era — the machine was conceived as a visual statement.

Saturated groups, dual boilers

The architecture La Marzocco's name rests on. Separate coffee and steam boilers, and groups integrated into the coffee boiler so brew water is not cooling on its way to the coffee.

Stainless steel throughout

Boilers and brewing groups in robust stainless, with high-wattage heating elements. It is the reason so many FB70s are still working three decades on.

Straightforward to service

Mechanically simple by modern standards and thoroughly familiar to technicians. Fewer electronics to fail, and parts knowledge that has had decades to accumulate.

Being straight about the age

The FB70 predates PID temperature control, which entered the La Marzocco range with the GB5 in 2005. Many FB70s in circulation have since been retrofitted with twin PID controllers and pre-heater assemblies, but that is a modification rather than a factory specification — so it is worth asking whether this unit has been. Everything else here is genuinely of the platform: the saturated groups, the dual boilers and the stainless construction are all original design, not compromises.

New old stock

An unused machine that has simply never been sold. On a platform this mechanically straightforward, sitting unused does not age a machine the way years of service would — what you get is the whole of its working life still ahead of it, at a price no current flagship comes close to.

Before ordering, check the terms that apply — our Shipping, Returns & Warranty page sets out what cover applies, and it differs between new and used equipment.

Who it suits

  • Bars and cafes wanting a machine that is visibly the centrepiece of the counter
  • Operators who would rather buy mechanical longevity than electronic features
  • Fit-outs where the budget will not stretch to a current flagship
  • Roasteries and venues with a technician they already trust

Installation: a plumbed, high-draw commercial machine requiring a mains water connection, drainage and a suitable dedicated electrical supply. The FB70 uses high-wattage heating elements, so have a licensed electrician confirm your supply and a qualified technician handle installation and commissioning.

Water and grinder

On a machine of this age water treatment is not optional, it is the difference between decades more service and an expensive descale. Fit filtration or softening suited to your local supply and keep to a replacement schedule.

Pair it with a grinder that holds a setting through service. Our commercial coffee grinders range covers the options, and the wider commercial coffee machines collection is there if you are still comparing platforms.

Ordering

Freight is calculated at checkout, and our Shipping, Returns & Warranty page covers delivery and returns terms. For questions on group count, what the refurbishment covered, or whether PID has been fitted, contact our team, or see our finance options if you would rather spread the cost.

Frequently asked questions

What is the FB70?

La Marzocco introduced it for the company's seventieth anniversary: a later version of the Linea given a body that could be produced in virtually any colour. Thousands were built and sold worldwide, and it helped launch a great many of the independent bars that defined specialty coffee.

Why do FB70s come in colours nothing else does?

Because that was the point of the machine. The anniversary body was designed for colour, which is why finishes like this one exist on an FB70 and rarely on anything else from the period. If you want a machine that is visibly the centrepiece of a bar, this is the platform.

What is the thermal architecture?

Saturated brewing groups with dual-boiler technology, in robust stainless steel. Brew and steam are handled by separate boilers, and the saturated groups mean brew water is not cooling on its way to the coffee. It is the architecture La Marzocco's reputation was built on.

Does it have PID temperature control?

Not as a factory specification. PID entered the La Marzocco range with the GB5 in 2005, while the FB70 is an earlier platform. Many FB70s have since been retrofitted with twin PID controllers and pre-heater assemblies by workshops, so it is genuinely worth asking whether this unit has been — it makes a real difference to how tightly it holds temperature.

Is a machine of this age still a sensible buy?

For the right buyer, yes. The FB70 is mechanically straightforward, built from stainless steel, and technicians know it well. That combination is why so many are still in service. It is a different proposition from a current machine: less electronic sophistication, more longevity, and a fraction of the price.

What do I need in place before installation?

A mains water connection, drainage and a suitable dedicated electrical supply. The FB70 uses high-wattage heating elements, so have a licensed electrician confirm your supply and a qualified technician carry out installation and commissioning.

What should I ask before ordering?

Group count, whether PID has been retrofitted, and what the refurbishment covered — particularly whether the boilers were descaled. On a machine of this age those three answers tell you most of what you need to know.

New old stock?

An unused machine that has simply never been sold. On a platform this mechanically straightforward, sitting unused does not age a machine the way years of service would — what you get is the whole of its working life still ahead of it, at a price no current flagship comes close to.
