Description

Di Pacci — Stovetop 9 Bar Espresso Maker

9Barista Mk.2 Standard Coffee Machine

The 9Barista Mk.2 Standard makes genuine 9 bar espresso on a stovetop, with no pump, no electronics and no power point.

The 9Barista Mk.2 Standard is a British-engineered stovetop espresso maker that uses stove heat, a sealed boiler and a coiled heat exchanger to push water through the coffee at 9 bar and 93°C, the same conditions as a café machine. You load 17 to 20 g of freshly ground coffee, put it on the stove, and get 40 to 45 g of espresso in a few minutes.

The Mk.2 replaces the original 9Barista with fully machined ECOBrass and stainless steel castings, a stainless heat exchanger, a ceramic thermal break and an anodised aluminium chimney, so far fewer plastic parts sit near the heat. The Standard version comes with the standard portafilter, a 53 mm basket, a silicone basket cap and walnut handles.

Key Features of the 9Barista Mk.2 Standard

💪 Genuine 9 bar pressure

Pressure builds from steam inside the sealed boiler, not a pump, giving real espresso rather than moka-pot coffee.

🌡️ Built-in temperature control

The heat exchanger delivers water at about 93°C, so you don't need to manage stove heat precisely.

🔥 Works on most stoves

Use it on gas, electric ring, halogen or a camping stove, and on induction with the adaptor plate.

🛠️ Fully machined Mk.2 build

Machined ECOBrass and stainless steel castings with a frosted finish replace the partly cast Mk.1 body.

🧱 Ceramic thermal break

A steatite ceramic break and aluminium chimney replace silicone and plastic parts near the heat.

🧼 Quick to clean

No pipes, pumps or descaling programs; cleaning takes about a minute.

How Espresso Happens Without a Pump

Espresso needs hot water forced through finely ground coffee at around 9 bar. Café machines use an electric pump; the 9Barista uses the stove.

  • Water in the sealed boiler heats on the stove and builds pressure.
  • That pressure drives brew water through a coiled stainless heat exchanger, which delivers it at about 93°C.
  • The water reaches the coffee at about 9 bar, for a recommended 25 to 30 second extraction.

You get a properly pressurised espresso with crema from a device that has no electronics or moving pump parts to fail.

9Barista Mk.2 Standard vs Mk.2 Pro

Both versions share the same machined Mk.2 body and brewing performance. The differences are in the parts you handle.

Feature Mk.2 Standard Mk.2 Pro
Portafilter Standard (spouted) Naked
Basket Standard 53 mm 53 mm IMS precision basket
Basket cap Silicone Laser-drilled stainless steel
Handles Walnut Anodised aluminium
Body and brewing Same Same

Di Pacci recommendation: Choose the Standard if you want reliable everyday espresso and like the warmth of walnut handles. Don't bother with it if you want to watch and fine-tune extractions with a naked portafilter; the Pro is built for that. Ask us about Pro availability.

Best Grinders for the 9Barista Mk.2

A 9 bar extraction needs a genuine espresso grind; pre-ground or blade-ground coffee won't do the 9Barista justice.

Grinder Burr Why it pairs well
Turin DF54 Flat burr, single dose An affordable single-dose grinder that suits a machine at this price
Eureka Mignon Specialita 55 55 mm flat Quiet, stepless espresso grinding for a daily home routine
Turin DF64 Gen 2 64 mm flat Room to grow if you later move up to an electric espresso machine

Who This Espresso Maker Is For

✓ Ideal if you:
  • Want real espresso without a bench-top machine
  • Cook on gas, electric or induction (with the plate)
  • Travel, camp or live off-grid
  • Drink mostly espresso, long blacks or small milk drinks
  • Like simple, repairable gear with no electronics
✗ Consider alternatives if you:
  • Want to steam milk; the 9Barista has no steam wand, so consider an electric machine like the Lelit Anna PL41
  • Need several coffees in quick succession; each brew takes 3 to 6 minutes
  • Don't own, and don't plan to buy, an espresso-capable grinder
  • Want push-button convenience; see our home coffee machines

9Barista Mk.2 Standard Coffee Machine — Frequently Asked Questions

Does the 9Barista make real espresso?

Yes. The 9Barista brews at 9 bar and about 93°C, the same pressure and temperature as a café espresso machine, so you get true espresso with crema rather than moka-pot coffee.

Does the 9Barista work on an induction cooktop?

Yes, with the induction adaptor plate. The listing ships with the heat transfer plate for gas and electric stoves, so call (02) 9758 0760 if you need the induction plate.

How long does the 9Barista take to brew?

About 3 to 6 minutes from cold depending on your stove, with no pre-heating needed. Don't leave it on the heat for more than 8 minutes.

Can the 9Barista steam milk?

No. The 9Barista makes espresso only. Use a separate milk frother or a stovetop milk jug for lattes and flat whites.

What's the difference between the 9Barista Mk.1 and Mk.2?

The Mk.2 has fully machined ECOBrass and stainless castings, a stainless heat exchanger instead of brass, a ceramic thermal break instead of silicone, an aluminium chimney instead of plastic, and a 3 mm boiler O-ring instead of 2 mm.

What grind and dose should I use in the 9Barista?

Use 17 to 20 g of freshly ground coffee at an espresso grind, and aim for a 25 to 30 second extraction. An espresso-capable burr grinder is strongly recommended.
